Shiny Objects

Why yes, I am easily distracted by shiny things and book clubs.

Why yes, I am easily distracted by shiny things and book clubs.

I have to pick a book for my book club, and I’m obsessing about it. I mean, come on, the book you pick says a lot about you as a person and as a reader. It sends a message—a message in which you hopefully you say, “Look at me, I’m an avid reader with wide-ranging and impeccable yet relatable taste.”

So you want to pick something intelligent but not too erudite; something funny or thought-provoking or moving but not sappy, too depressing, or boring; something that will generate thoughtful discussion not apathy; something not too long but not too short; something not too dark and heavy but not too light and fluffy; something that you would want to read but nothing that you are so personally invested in that you will take it personally when people rip it apart.

It’s quite the dilemma and the object of my distraction this week. Oh and did I mention I’m picking the book for January? It’s only the first of the year and will set a tone for the rest of the year but no pressure, right?

I’ve been researching web sites, scouring Goodreads, comparing ratings, looking through my vast library of books, reading reviews, checking page counts, and obsessing about my pick. Good god, this is stressful.

Oooh look at these shiny objects . . .

I’ve been reading . . . Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Finished this lovely book. The first half gets bogged down with details and tangents but the second half of the book is so good, it’s all worth it. Besides, when you get to the end, you realize all that information upfront has a purpose. Amor Towles writing is lovely, the characters are a joy (which was refreshing), and once you get to the action, it’s really clever.

I am still reading The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, which I would pick as our book club book but this is a dense book. Too heavy for my first pick. Besides, it’s also hardcover, and we try to avoid those.

I’ve been watching . . . surprisingly not football. I know it’s football season, but for the first time in awhile, I am not that excited about it. Maybe because it’s painful to watch my team, the San Francisco 49ers. I’ve started back up on The Mindy Project, and I’m thinking about going back to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Looking forward to the new season of The Good Place.

I’ve been listening to . . . The National. They released their new album Sleep Well Beast last week. Great to hear singer Matt Berninger talk about their process for writing new songs and how the album came about.

Also loving this new tiny desk concert. I don’t typically listen to a lot of country music, but Jason Isbell is becoming a favorite of mine.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I want to know what you pick! 🙂

I’m still obsessing but I think I’ve narrowed it down to a few good choices. I’ll definitely post my final choice. I really wanted us to read The Warmth of Other Suns but it’s over 600 pages and we’ll have had several 500- to 600-page books in a row. People have been asking for a break.
