Why yes, I am easily distracted by shiny things and whining.
It’s been a tough workweek, and I’ve been burning the candle at both ends, feeling tired and a little bit sorry for myself. Add to that a dash of social-plan changes, and my whining volume turned up—not quite to 11 but enough that it distracted me.
Then I went to my gyrotonic workout and my instructor had a t-shirt on that said, “Perspective changes everything.” And you know what, it does? Well, that and she and I both laughed our butts off at some silly goofy random thing. If you want to change perspective, try laughing. It did the trick for me, and let me tell you, my perspective changed and I got through the rest of my tough week feeling pretty good. And I finished a major project.
So I am ready to enjoy my holiday weekend. Hope you have a great weekend planned!
Oooh look at these shiny objects . . .
- This dog clearly appreciates a good orchestra.
- Wow, 10 years. Happy 10th birthday to the iPhone!
- A People’s History of Chicago reflects a spectrum of experiences.
- 14 tips for traveling alone.
- Because I need to go to this. (How did I just find out about it?)
I’ve been reading . . . The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy and Evicted by Matthew Desmond.
I got the chance to see Arundhati Roy last week, hear her read from her new book. It’s lovely to hear her do the reading. Listen to this excerpt.
It’s hard to say that Evicted is a good book because it’s kind of depressing but it is a good book. It’s well written, well researched, and compelling—it’s the topic that is hard to read about. The book addresses poverty in the American city, using Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the case study. I can see why the book won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.
I’ve been watching . . . not a darn thing. Between working and working, I haven’t had time for watching anything. I’ve been spending my time reading and waiting for Game of Thrones!!! Just three more weeks.
I’ve been listening to . . . John Mayer’s latest album. Say what you will about his romantic life but his music is pretty darn good. Also checking out the band Phoenix based on a recommendation from a friend. I’m way late to that party but have been listening to some of their songs.
Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend!
