Shiny Objects

Why yes, I am easily distracted by shiny things and song and dance numbers.

Why yes, I am easily distracted by shiny things and song and dance numbers.

I cannot stop listening to the La La Land songs or watching the movie. Yes, I know, it’s a sickness.

But I’ve been walking a lot more now that the weather is so nice, and it is such a great soundtrack for walking in the city. Whenever I listen to “Another Day of Sun” and walk in the city, it puts me in a good mood. I want to break out and dance down the sidewalk and have others join me.

Anyone who knows me knows I am not a fan of Broadway musicals, so why do I love La La Land so much? It’s not just because of Ryan Gosling. I think it’s because it reminds me so much of those old Hollywood musicals that I grew up with.

When I was a kid, whenever my dad traveled for work, my mom couldn’t sleep so she would stay up late and watch those classic Hollywood movies—musicals, screwball comedies, drama, tearjerkers, you name it. And I got to watch them with her. These were the rare times that 1.) I got to stay up late, 2.) I got to watch TV, and 3.) I got along with my mother. In fact, watching those movies together was really the only time my mom was anything close to nurturing.

Every time I see a classic movie, it brings back good memories of those shared moments with my mom. And I’m grateful that I have those memories to hold onto.

Oooh look at these shiny objects . . .

I’ve been reading . . . Madonna in a Fur Coat and a book of poetry by Naomi Shihab Nye. Almost done with Madonna in a Fur Coat, so I’ll give my quick review next week. I’ve got so many books in the queue; I’m not sure what I will read next.

I’ve been watching . . . Young and Hungry and Mom. I sort of stopped watching The Voice because I got sick of seeing fantastic singers voted off over crappy singers. I’m watching Mom because I needed something light and funny to watch on a long flight without getting too deep into a movie. It’s in some ways a terrible show but Allison Janney, who stars as the mom, is so funny. She gets the best lines, and she is so good in her role. She makes the show. Next on my list is to watch Master of None. I tried once before and didn’t love it but everywhere I turn, someone is raving about it.

I’ve been listening to . . . the La La Land soundtrack. And I’m obsessed with this scene from the movie. I keep watching it over and over. I love the dancing and want more of it. I would really love to see these two do more song and dance movies—maybe a remake of *gasp* Singin’ in the Rain. Yep, I said it. I know it’s a classic and I’d hate to see it redone but if it was, I want Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the leads.

Have a lovely weekend.
