Why yes, I am easily distracted by shiny things but not Easter.
Sorry, I’m just not an Easter person. It’s probably the only holiday I’m not into. Come on, I’m from a Muslim family, and while we did celebrate Christmas, Easter was pushing it. Besides, I’m not into pastels.
But I am celebrating this month. It’s National Poetry Month. Every morning when I wake up, I read a new poem. Right now I am reading Naomi Shihab Nye’s book of poetry 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Ms. Shihab Nye at an education conference years ago. She took the time to talk with me about what it’s like growing up in the U.S. with a Middle Eastern background. She’s part Palestinian, and I’m Turkish-American. One of my favorite poets, she’s as gracious and warm as I imagined. Her personality reflected her poetry—open, thoughtful, and hopeful.
What are you celebrating this weekend? Easter? Spring? Poetry? Whatever it is, enjoy!
Oooh look at these shiny objects . . .
- Celebrate National Poetry Month by reading some poetry.
- A lovely interview with Naomi Shihab Nye.
- A straightforward and thoughtful letter Naomi Shihab Nye wrote after 9/11.
- I am blown away by this young poet. She is also the winner of the 2015 Individual World Poetry Slam Championship.
- Because I cannot stop listening to her poetry. “The Things She Told Me” is her piece honoring women.
I’ve been reading . . . The Sympathizer and Madonna in a Fur Coat. Making progress on both but still moving slowly. My mind seems be able to handle only fluffy television shows right now.
I’ve been watching . . . Young and Hungry. Yes, my cheesy show is back on. Sweet! Also watching The Voice again. I appreciate the positive vibe of the show. The focus is on each person being the best they can be, not tearing others down.
I’ve been listening to . . . Leon Bridges and John Legend, not as a duet, although that would be a pretty cool duet. Still love “Coming Home” by Leon Bridges. Its sexy rhythms beg you to slow dance. And his pleading promise of “I wanna be around” is hard to resist. It’s a tender, sexy love song.
Happy Easter, and have a wonderful weekend!

You know me. I don’t like those pastels.
